Palenque vs Alvin Ailey Dance Company

After watching both videos I realize that I have learnt some new things and now I can establish some similarities and comparisons, let's see...

Similarities

-Their dancing represent their history, experiences and stories.

-They try to express their thoughts about life, wishes and specially their feelings such as angry, hapiness, gratitude, respect, love, and others.

Differences

-Alvin Company pay more attention to choreography and the message they want to show us,whereas  palenqueros focus on the lyrics, the singer's voice and the drums' sound.

-Palenqueros sing to tell us about their experiences in life, to show us one of the most important apsects from their culture but Alvin Company, they dance and sing to God, to express religious customs.

Holidays In Other Countries

What did you learn about Holidays in other countries?

&

How  and why english was used on this sites?

I was looking at that websites and I realize that English in this cases was very useful because it allows me to learn how people from countries different to mine celebrate their Holidays.

I learnt that Peruvian Christmas is celebrated similarly as we do it here in Colombia. I also learnt how important is water on Thai culture and their way to enjoy New Year, I was surprised because their New Year is on April and ours is on December.

From Indian Holi Festival, I pay special attention on their slogan "Life turns colourful", because it is literally. I had some stereotypes about eastern countries: I thought people there was boring but now I know that they can be funnier than western countries. Honestly, I would like to enjoy the experiences of Thai New Year and Indian Holi Festival.

Finally, I read about Guatemalan Holy Week and I compared it with this Holiday in Colombia, althought we share religion I think that they are more united and respectful in this aspect than us.

I BELONG TOSUBCULTURE!

How have either a sport, hobby, or music shaped your own personal culture? Give details to support your ideas.’

Since I was born I've had a special link with the marriage of music and sport: DANCE.

When  I was a little girl, my grandfather turned on the radio and teached me to dance: merengue, salsa, vallenato, cumbia and each type of music we heard.

Later, I started going to school and soon I began to belong to the Dance Group.

Dancing is one of my passions, it is maybe because it helps me with my healthcare, it allows me to meet more people and the most important: it makes me feel happy.

Aside from school's dance group, I haven't belong to a specific academy or dancing school but I know one day I will be dancing on the streets while Barranquilleros are celebrating our Carnival.

SOLIDARITY WITH HARDWORKER WOMEN

Well, I think I would lend some money to Ericka Patricia; because I believe that women are strong enough to work and earn money, to live in good conditions, to mantain a family, to be succesfull, to be independent, as man can. Ericka is a young woman, she is demonstrating that she is a brave and hardworker woman and she could make her business grow.

KENYAN MATATU DRIVERS

1. How are matatu drivers treated in his experience with the BBC?

First of all, the producer and the team were very interested in the matatu driver's story and in the tour. Maybe for the pressure, the driver felt intimidated by cameras and he lost his appetite. Despite of the whisperings of matatu touts; in general, the treatment was good.

2. Do Barranquilleros have the same negative opinion of mototaxistas as the Kenyans have of matatu drivers?

Some barranquilleros think similarly to kenyans, there's a belief that mototaxistas are poor and non-educated people. This are just stereotypes, because the reality is not the same described. Some of the mototaxistas have received education and also they have that job like a way to survive, a way to earn some money to them and to their families. Barranquilleros and Kenyans must break this stereotypes because mototaxistas and matatu drivers are people that deserves the same opportunities than the other people and furthermore they are hard workers and worthy of respect.
