Questions:
1. What different points of view do we see in this story?
2. Explain the reasons behind the miscommunication that occurred between these two men.
2. Explain the reasons behind the miscommunication that occurred between these two men.
Answers:
1. In this story we can appreciate clearly both points of view.
- In a first side we have the white man's thoughts, he thinks that he is superior, that he is better than the black man, that he merits the best in the world just for being a white man. Also he thinks that hard-work is only for black people, who furthermore are hungry and always are asking for money, more than they deserve.
- By the other side, we have black man's thoughts, he thinks that he is less human and less worthy for being a black man, that he always has to be behind shadows of white people because he is inferior. He thinks that his purpose in the world is working hard to white people, enduring mistreatment in order to receive some food and money.
2. I think that the principal reason behind this communication problem was: not to listen. If white man had listened to black man, he had understood that actually black man's mission wasn't bothering him but earn some money for him and his daughter; moreover that anything that white man may need, he will do it if white man asked for it, and this to avoid bothering him.
I totally agree with you. Maybe the white man thought he was superior to the black guy and, the other one thought that the life he deserves is the one he had. But that’s something we are inferring.
ReplyDeleteBut the truth is that the real problem in this story is the miscommunication between these two men: not to listen each other. This is understandable because they completely live different lives and, they will always be separated by class, education, language, and culture. As I wrote: “if they had taken more time to ask about each other rather than imagine about the other's thoughts, their relationship probably would be another one”.
